Diabetes Treatment Targets
Early diagnosis, treatment and good control of diabetes is vital to reduce the incidence of serious diabetes complications. As primary care is usually the initial contact of care for patients with diabetes, improving expertise within primary care professionals is vital to achieving the ambitions of NHSE.
The South West Cardiovascular Clinical Network have been investing in diabetes learning & training materials for primary care (Health Care Assistants, Practice Nurses, Diabetes Nurse Leads and GPs). This includes on-line modules and the Cambridge Diabetes Education Programme (CDEP). CDEP provides a range of e-learning modules at varying levels from foundation level to specialist level catering for every level.
The Network has bought 2 CDEP licences per GP practice across the South West, enabling 2 members of staff from each GP practice to have access to the education programme. It is expected once trained they will support the education of other staff within the practice. We anticipate that this will be rolled out in 2017. The Network will be providing monthly reports on the uptake for STPs/CCGs to monitor progress.
